International Equal Pay Day 2024 / Pay of the Future : Solutions to close the gender pay gap

International Equal Pay Day, observed annually on September 18th, highlights the need for action to close the persistent gender pay gap worldwide. Despite significant strides in the world of work, women continue to earn less than men for work of equal value across various industries and sectors and regions. This disparity both perpetuates and is a symptom of gender inequality, impeding the full realization of women’s economic and social rights and equitable, sustainable economic growth. As the international community negotiates the Pact of the Future and recommits to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in September 2024, equal pay for work of equal value – as outlined in SDG target 8.5 – is far from being achieved. At the current rate, it will take 257 years to close the gender pay gap.

To celebrate International Equal Pay Day, EPIC will host a high-level event to raise awareness of successful policies, initiatives and tools that are reducing the gender pay gap. Speakers will be invited to provide feedback on the implementation of EPIC pledges made at the 2018 and 2023 pledging events, sharing lessons learned and good practices that can be adapted and applied to different contexts. The event will also highlight multistakeholder and whole-of-society approaches – like EPIC – that are effecting change, in line with the reinvigoration of multilateralism seen at the Summit of the Future.

The event will take place in-person at UN Women’s offices New York, New York on 18 September 2023 between 5:30pm and 7:30pm EDT. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
