Commemorated for the first time in 2020, the International Equal Pay Day is celebrated on 18 September. To mark the day this year, the Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC), the only global multi-stakeholder partnership working to reduce the gender pay gap, is hosting a global webinar.
In addition to its unprecedented health consequences globally, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drastically impact the world of work, women in particular. The pandemic and resulting economic fallout have weakened the labour market position of women with family responsibilities, due largely to the childcare and educational requirements imposed by pandemic-related closures and lockdowns. This crisis is threatening to push back many of the limited gains made on gender equality in paid work and exacerbate the feminization of poverty.
Panellists will share the efforts of international organizations, governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations to ensure that equal pay remains central to COVID-19 pandemic responses worldwide and to fully recognize the contributions of women to COVID-19 recovery. The event will aim to reinvigorate commitment to closing the gender pay gap across regions and sectors in an effort to build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic.
